Naturally Create the Scent of Fall

It’s officially October! Though the weather here in California has yet to catch up with the calendar, fall is finally here. We’re all excited to put out our pumpkins and dust off our soup recipes, but before you light your fall-scented candles, keep reading. Scented candles are used more throughout the holiday season than any other time, and though they may smell just like apple pie or cinnamon spice, they contain toxic chemicals that can have adverse affects on your health and that of your family. But there’s good news! There is an easy way to get that beautiful fall scent in your house naturally and safely.

I first discovered using mulling spices when I walked into a William Sonoma one day in November, and my jaw dropped at how delicious and wonderful it smelled in the store. I asked if I had just missed a cooking demonstrations and the employee said no, they were simply simmering mulling spices. I purchased a jar that day, and have not used anything else to scent my home in the fall but these fantastic herbs ever since.

What are Mulling Spices?

Mulling spices are made up of herbs and dried fruit – that’s it! They are most often used in drinks like hot apple cider or mulled wine, but they can also be used to create the perfect seasonal essence in your home. Pre-packaged mulling spices may include: allspice, cinnamon sticks, dried orange rind, cloves, ginger, nutmeg, cardamom and/or black peppercorns. You can purchase ready to use mulling spices on Amazon or many other retailers (most grocery stores carry them, but they may not be on the shelves until closer to Thanksgiving.), my favorite blend is from William Sonoma but that just may be nostalgia from my first experience with the spices. You can also make your own blend by picking up the whole herbs at the grocery store. In fact, making your own bags of mulling spices can be a great holiday gift!

How to Create the Scent of Fall Using Mulling Spices

It's so easy!

1. Once you have the spices (either pre-packaged or you've made your own), simply bring 3-4 cups of water to a boil.

2. Add 2 tablespoons (or more if you'd like) to the water and allow to boil for a couple of minutes.

3. Turn the heat to the lowest setting and allow the spices to simmer. As they simmer, the spices will fill your kitchen and the rest of your home with their rich scent.

4. Be sure to turn off the burner before the water gets too low. If desired, add more water and spices, and repeat the process.

I hope you enjoy this sensational treat as much as I do. Wishing you a warm, happy, and healthy season!
